- A Resource About Spasmodic Torticollis

-
- Over the past several weeks, I have found several questions about
- "spasmodic torticollis" in my mail. This is a condition in which the muscles
- of the neck contract involuntarily, twisting the neck and position of the head
- into abnormal attitudes, and producing abnormal movements. This is one of a
- group of disorders known as "focal dystonias" (involuntary muscle spasms) and
- not to be confused with the run of the mill "stiff necks". In researching the
- condition, I discovered fine patient education brochure from the Dystonia
- Medical Research Foundation. The Foundation was established in 1976 by the
- Belzberg family of Canada after a family member was found to have generalized
- torsion dystonia. The Foundation now is an organization of people with
- dystonia, and their families friends and supporters. You may obtain the
- booklet "Spasmodic Torticollis", by sending your request with a stamped self
- addressed envelope to DYSTONIA, 8383 Wilshire Blvd. Beverly Hills, CA 90211
- and mentioning that you read about the booklet in Dr. Bruckheim's medical
- column.
